In recent cartoons like Steven Universe where men and women dress basically the same, their figures are androgynous to the point Steven and Sadie practically have the same figure and there's very little aside from the character's voices telling you if a character is male or female, so something as simple as eyelashes and lipstick makes a massive difference.
