John is trying to build a legacy around George and Cans Without Labels and treating it like his magnum opus. And it's becoming that in the sense that it completely represents who he is: A man who lives in the past, obsessed with his abusive father, and can't meet a deadline, is a complete hack who mooched off the talent of other cartoonists, and is completely out of touch with the world.
