It's natural to expect something to be kinda rocky when other examples of that same genre have like a century or more of experience, but that specific type has none

We had millennia of 'guys go out into a field and meet each other in big groups and stab or shoot each other' to get fuckin GOOD at it, but once it changed to 'a small group of brainwashed psychopaths in a dense jungle or urban desert full of hidey-holes, in opposition to the legitimate government of the area' we started falling flat on our faces.
I mean we handled the whole 'now we can fly and have motorized attack vehicles' thing pretty well considering how rapidly THAT happened, but...
so yeah, there's no history of adult animation to pull from to figure out what works or doesn't work, and the rules change constantly. Even japan doesn't do hentai the way they used to because nothing's acceptable anymore.

Most people I know like shit like gumball, hell I spent an afternoon watching spongebob with my roommates at uni, a few old people I know watch loud house and so does most of my family. And looking through twitter at animation news of the large and active community of animation fans, like 90% of them are over 18.
And that's without considering anime, which except for like over 30s I know IRL, most people I've met at work/uni watch SOME kind of.
I honestly think you're projecting. Even outside pf my own social circles (because sure, I obviously hang out with people of similar interest), just a basic once over of the people retweeting shitty gumball clips will provide what's nearly 100% millenials. Or actual celebrities making pretty popular tweets about love death and robots, or nu(S)he-ra (which is undeniably made by and marketed at 20 something females).
Actually thinking about it now there weren't many kids in the McDonald's Rick and Morty hordes.
88000 people gave 11 million dollars for a critical role animated series and while I don;t technically have proof they don't fall into the mouth breathing autist camp, Critical Role is the most normalfag you can get.

Animation, at its best is magical and opens up whole new realms of storytelling that would be impossible to do with live action - as such the best examples will always be aimed at children or at least families.

I mostly agree with you but there are definitely some examples of erotic films that do absolutely have great narratives and are art. In the Realm of the Senses is an absolutely wonderful film, and there are definitely recent examples with films like The Handmaiden, Blue is the Warmest Color, and Secretary. Even those classic Euro Tinto Brass movies were at least entertaining.

I suppose this all depends on where you draw the line between "erotic art" and "porn". As the saying goes, we can't explain it but we know it when we see it.

You could, but IMO you'd be wrong - making good family content only requires you to avoid certain topics that might be inappropriate for the demographic.

Producing good 'adult' entertainment by contrast mandates that you must include specific types of content regardless of whether it fits the story or negatively impacts the pacing.

This is generally why adult entertainment is so bad - it has to sacrifice being 'good' to pull off 'adult' and it's not a good trade-off

"Adult" in that context refers to explicit content, while "Mature" is the term you're referring too and designates complex content. You can have a mature story for children, but you can't have an adult story for children.
It's really a matter of personal opinion. It's how I see the subject, I know that adult and mature are used interchangeably but this is how I separate them.
