The biggest problem with their relationship is that it's not based on mutual closeness and chemistry they gained through experience. It's the typical "Nerd kid puts cute girl on a pedestal and pines from afar till the plot falls into them hooking up for...reasons." Peter has no reason to like her beyond a vague crush and she has no reason to like him beyond being the only girl in the movie.
