- He never overshadowed the others, nor made you wonder why he was even there
- He actually has some history in the comics
- While he was initially a diversity push, by the time of JL he was well fleshed out and ripe for adaptation
This last point is the most important one, because these days characters are getting heavily pushed without any memorable moments or characterization underneath their belt, which just adds to the animosity when they get any spotlight.
Adding to that is the rush of creators pushing out OCs in the hopes that they'll get that sweet royalty money when the character is inevitably adapted to another medium.
