In the before times, in the long long ago before Hiroshimoot, back when gay porn was something remarkable posted to get a reaction, and being gay had not yet become fashionable in popular culture, there was the trap. As now, there were threads of attractive women, that anons might gratify themselves. Because some anons want to watch the world burn (though that phrase hadn't yet been memed), it was fashionable to post images of a male that passed as an attractive female in order to bait heterosexual anons into a gay fap. If revealed, the penis would be towards the end of a series of images, with earlier ones ideally managing to deceive observers. Hence the term "trap" and its association with Admiral Ackbar (cries of "it's a trap!" were common when the charade fell). It was a performance in which some anons might feel embarrassed or question their sexual orientation and onlookers had a laugh.
A trap, therefore, is a male who convincingly passes as an attractive female. The deception being good enough to work is the central point, since if no one is fooled, no one will fall for the trap.
"Reverse trap" is a derivative term with the sexes reversed, but it's usually used as a fetish-related term since no one tries to bait anons with them.
