Imagine being stuck on the same planet, millenias upon millenias, without being able to forget or create any meaningful bond with anyone because because they will die or forget, and you won't. What he did was horrible, but his life(s) was torture, travelling and discoveries were his only temporary salvation. Granted he probably should have left with Shinonome and go on solo adventures, Doctor Who style.
