Having a liquid-like form that can change shapes isn't a Venom-specific idea. You might as well throw in Spawn, or Aku, or even Green Lantern as the same sort of thing. Or in the real world, octopi (which ties back in nicely with the ink theme), which the Japanese have been making fantastical drawings of for thousands of years prior to Venom's creation.
