Maybe he's bummed out and Jake gives him some encouragement, maybe he doesn't know where he stands with HW, maybe he still feels resolute and wants to keep trying, but you do have to give him something. This is supposed to be the conclusion of his story after all.
I feel there's a difference between leaving a protagonist's journey open ended because you can't resolve everything with them, and in some ways perhaps it's even better to not, and just not giving them any material because toy don't care. One of my biggest criticisms with the AT finale is that it just didn't feel like it cared about Finn. It gave him some shticks just to make it not seem too obvious, and there was some genuinely good moments like him contemplating death in Golb, but the feeling of a creator loving their star just wasn't there. It hurts cause I loved Finn so much.
