Owning slaves is the same kind of burden as having extra family members. You must provide for them, give them food, clothes, shelter, healthcare, and whatever else is necessary. And all of that just to get nigger tier job done. To top it off, they have no incentive work well unless you literally pay them bonuses, which defeats the purpose of owning slaves, and if you punish them for bad work then they have every incentive to cheat, making their normally sad performance even worse. You wind up paying the same amount of money, if not more, to do the same job. That's why even in heyday less than 20% of plantations had slaves, and they weren't allowed anywhere near places that required skilled labor anyway.
