Professional singer and amateur broadway dicksucker here

These vocals are so fucking flat and boring and robotic (and any sustained note from Will is autotuned to hell, guess the nigga has no breath control) it's so strange paired with the very dynamic Menken scores

Also any time I get to the "hip hop flare" they shoved into those songs I cringe hard

I remember hearing that when Disney set out to do the original Aladdin movie, they always, ALWAYS had Robin Williams in mind for the part. Even before they pitched it to him, they were essentially writing him as a Robin Williams character and desperately hoping that Williams would bite at it. It was all built around his quirks, his personality, his delivery.

Listening to this, it's just... sad. Will Smith isn't an un-talented actor or singer, but he's being given a part very specifically written for another actor, and in so doing not only is it a poor fit, it's not letting Smith play to his own strengths.

I'm normally not the "nobody else should ever play this character again" type, like those weirdos who felt like The Joker ought to be retired after Heath Ledger died or whatever, but in this case I feel like it's become so obvious to just what extent the character can't really exist outside of Robin Williams or at the very least a very skilled impersonator who has no vested interest in bringing anything uniquely their own to the table.

It's not "awful", OP, but the emphasis in the songs is on the wrong things. They wrote them for Robin Williams, so it doesn't fit Will Smith and he puts his style and flourish in the wrong place. Like the big finale in "You ain't never had a friend like me" is off the mark.

But yes he was. He lacked the natural timbre to do most traditional roles but his technique was outstanding (typical among people who work with their voices so heavily) and the man was a god when it came to character voices.

There are places a singer can aspire to beyond operatic perfection

Why is the singing out of sync with the music?
Why does Will Smith end sentences in a flat note? "In the old ba...zar" "brand new... star" "a...ye (eye)" "Ali abab... wa" "definitely" and so on. The end of each line is supposed to have a punch.
How could they keep the power in the background singers but lose it in the lead singer?

Timbre is the more intractible "quality" of someone's voice, separate from pitch entirely.

A voice can have a gravelly timbre, or a twang, or be particularly clear and resonant.

Robin had a million character voices and solid vocal technique, which to me is far more important than being the one in ten million guys with a "golden" voice (like that hobo)

Every song on the album has a consistent problem with energy - they're extending out certain vowels and flattening notes and in general very slightly slowing down the songs, robbing them of character and fun.

They're also all very lazily melodyned (autotuned). It's not hard to make autotune imperceptible, they clearly just did not give a fuck and wanted to cheap out wherever they could.

I've always subscribed to the idea posited here all those years ago that the Genie was from the distant past, OUR TIME, and that Disney's Aladdin was like that Beowulf adaptation Christopher Lambert starred in that was actually the future being a repeat of the past. Because of that, I actually love the idea of a genre that only exists in a modern sense like rap being the core of the soundtrack; it makes the Genie seem extra-magical that he's either looking far into the future or from a very familiar to the moviegoing audience distant past. I don't dislike Will Smith; he's got that Christopher Walken/Bruce Campbell "I'll just play myself and you'll still like me" charm to him. I'm not yet sure whether or not I'll enjoy the movie because I haven't seen it yet, but I'm going to at least go into the theater with an open mind and not jut be mad that Robin Williams isn't still with us to play the Genie, which would of course be the ideal situation. All adaptations change something, otherwise there's no point in a new adaptation. It's not like Disney came up with the story anyways; it's an ancient tale from an ancient book that has had MULTIPLE adaptations across multiple forms of media; hell. even Magic: the Gathering (a card game) adapted it not long after Disney did, and they were just as off from the source material as the former by setting it in their own multiverse, albeit in different ways.

This discussion got me interested so I listened to both waiting in the wings and speechless for the first time back to back

It's immediately apparent to me that the singer in the former is a trained and practiced broadway-calibur singer putting talent and training into her performance while the singer in the latter, while not lazy or bad, is simply trying to get through the song (she jumps between breathy low notes and falsetto while mostly avoiding the powerful belting range a singer in this role would traditionally put on display - she, ironically, has no power in her song about being powerful and not staying silent)

The latter is also strangely low for this sort of song/role.

PS: I'm not saying Waiting in the Wings is a great song, I'm saying that the singer of that song is a great singer and oh hey look at that she was fucking Elpheba on Broadway in Wicked while Naomi Scott's main credits are pink ranger in the reboot of power rangers and singer in a disney channel series

Maybe it was just growing up in the 90s or something, but I personally miss the family-friendly hip hop soundtracks/beats that so many kids' movies had at one point. I also loved the Broadway production and I can see here that I am not alone in that, so I'm open to differences between other versions of things I like, but I know some people get an idea of what something is ingrained in their minds and it makes enjoying a different version difficult, which is absolutely fine and in no way an invalid opinion to have. You can like one or the other, neither, or even both, although I'm reserving judgment for actually having seen it myself.

Modern audiences barely remember the original Dumbo even existed, so it was bound to tank from the get go.

Aladdin, on the other hand, is a movie that most moviegoers remember fondly from their childhood, so it will naturally make a shitload of money because even if the live action remake is shit it will still have enough similarity to the original that they'll enjoy it, even though subconsciously they're just rewatching the original in their mind and not what is put in front of them.

What the fuck does this even mean? Am I supposed to get on my knees and thank them for this porn parody-tier recreation of a universally beloved film? Yeah, thank you for spending 183 million bucks to shit out a remake that brutally sucked all charm out of one of the most fun main casts in Disney movie history. Can you even imagine how much of a fucking talentless hack director you have to be to make Will Smith unappealing?
The worst part is that it's just going to continue until they have 0 movies left to remake. None of these movies will ever flop. People will go see it because it's Disney and it has 1 big actor's name attached to it. Even if they decide it's shit afterwards, their money will already have been spent. Reviewers like >>107732258 will give it good reviews for completely nonsensical reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with the actual quality of a film. Disney will see it as a success and see it as a reason to make more of this shit instead of original productions.
I wish it was as simple as just hating the film itself. The entire idea behind it is fucking awful.

Seriously, why can't Disney stop making remakes of their original animated movies? They just keep ruining them over and over.

Dalia is not a bad character, but considering how Aladdin was "expanded" after the first movie (with 2 sequels and a series), it makes think this movie has no sense at all.

+ First of all, once free, the Genie was still a Genie, not a regular human.
+ This new situation makes VERY unlikely the story of "The Return of Jafar" as canon. I liked the "demi-redemption" of Iago.
+ Makes me miss Eden (Genie from the bottle and Genie's girlfriend).

Yeah this is really the biggest problem. He's not exuding the energy needed for a number like this. I think they were afraid of straying too far from Williams without accounting for how different Smith is for it. This is a big reason why the Broadway version works- it's not trying to imitate Williams at all, but still keeps the spirit of the song and they got a Genie who adds the right level of energy. Here they apparently decided Smith going "uh huh yeah" a few times counts as "making it his own."

Also it was made to be animated. They tried to copy the original without offering any benefits of being live action while trying to mimic the animation decisions without asking themselves why it worked on the first place.
