No. There are threads of connection, but the flaws in this show stem 100% from the fact that this isn't the idea she came up with.
She spent time thinking up a quirky girl that daydreams too much.
She had to make it so the Magic Was Real. She had to create lore, and epic battles, and overarcing themes of magic oppression. She had to do it without a bunch of time to prepare for the first season.
Now, to be clear, I think that enough time has passed after season 1 that we should've gotten something BETTER than what we got, but that doesn't change the fact that much of the essential groundwork was stuff she hastily slapped together because she'd been carrying around a silly idea for a few years and then Disney asked for something else. There's some thematic connections in Star having magic, but that wasn't where the show fucked up.
The show fucked up with sloppy rules of magic and halfassed fantasy prejudices. And that's a direct result of Disney wanting a show that wasn't the thing that had been pitched to them.
