The writers didn't understand the implications of the narrative until it was very late.
They didn't know that Tumblr isn't the only source of information and they don't represent all the audience possible for a product. Maybe they needed to understand better the nature of people in general.
Some elements in the movie were very troublesome and instead of creating a product for everybody it would have been a product for a very small audience or a very especial kind of person. It was a risk of being ignored or despised by several groups.
