A company of over 200 Japanese soldiers attempted to attack a platoon of 28 Gurkha riflemen.
With grenades landing in his foxhole, Lachhiman and his comrades began throwing them back out until the last one blew up in his hand, leaving him alone with one hand, one eye and a side full of shrapnel. He continued to fight with his bolt action rifle, loading and firing one handed, and his Kukri knife.
His was found after the battle complaining about the flies bothering his stump.
