Slappy Squirrel had too much jaded wink-to-the-camera, at least in the beginning. But when she was just a cranky old lady, that was fine, cranky old ladies can be funny in and of themselves.
the problem with young people making pastiche of old cartoons, is the same as the problem with old people making fun of whatever millennials are doing. If you don't love the thing you're trying to reproduce, if you haven't lived in it as a fan does, then you're just going to look like an asshole.
On one end of the spectrum, you have "This is Spinal Tap", the funniest movie ever made, unless you're an actual touring musician, in which case it gives you PTSD flashbacks because all that shit actually happened to you. It's possible to do it right. But they succeeded where dozens of aging comedians on variety shows failed.
