I've been treated like an oddball by family members, friends, neighbors and acquaintances for being into nerdy stuff like computers and comic books, for being articulate and using certain words, for not giving a shit about expensive sneakers or sports or hip hop, et cetera.
But I never saw that as a negative. Being seen as different never really stopped me from getting any point across, or getting anything I needed from anybody especially within my own circle. If anything it was a fucking bonus most of the time because I was always the good kid, or the smart guy that could help with this or that, or even the reliably straight edge little brother that can piss in a water bottle because onii-chan doesn't want to fail a drug test.
All of this is a matter of perspective. This social banishment is nothing but a self fulfilling prophecy of the weak willed and insecure. Either that or you were raised around nothing but unbelievable assholes and that's just sad. But I've met plenty of people and it was never once a problem for me.
