It doesn't have to be creative to be drawn in a way where color detracts from it. Various styles are best suited to monochrome, simple flats or complex, realistic coloring.

And people say digital is shit because most digital colorists for American comics are insanely shit. Like, a teenager could do better tier.

Depends on what you’re complaining about, the lack of creativity is obvious, especially in regards to backgrounds and foregrounds. But the old, ‘everything looks murky’ meme hasn’t stood true since the mid 2000’s.

No, instead most colorists add details that don't mesh with the lineart/inks, add inconsistent lighting or ignore color theory outright. It's just like a huge chunk of their pencillers/writers being shit, it's just that the bar is somehow even lower since most people don't understand color.

This I understand, people shaping a piece to fit their own ideas rather than attempting to complete the original artists vision.

But I still think capeshit inkers are more guilty of this than colorists.

If book has to be in b&w and the artist didn't try to make the most of it, it's probably shit

Colorists still have a fucking boner for unecessary gradients which somehow look worse than most 70s (also unnecessary) gradients, a complete lack of understanding of color as a compositional element, the most obvious and safe palettes in the world and etc.
I'm not even gonna pretend the entirety of digital coloring is shit, but then you have to stop pretending a lot of good digital coloring is usually just aping analog coloring but in a more practical way

Big two inkers are shit twice fold, because they're very glad to annihilate the penciller's hatching, texturing and linework while at the same time just tracing everything, often very poorly, to the point you have to wonder if either the inker or the penciller are really needed.
