I think part of it was the personality really (before I matured emotionally and got a firm grasp on the concept of cringe), the idea that they were weird with a "random" sense of humor and liked Invader Zim and anime made them more approachable because that was essentially who I was as someone who grew up on that stuff and early Flash cartoons, just without the ability to express myself in terms of fashion seeing as you can't really dress in any sort of non-conforming manner as a male prior to high school without being singled out and called a fag.
The other is that there's just an inherent lewdness to the look, and now I can understand that being into that sort of fashion as a grown woman has a high correlation with being kinky, but it's interesting that I already thought of the aesthetic as sexual before I even had any real concept of what being kinky or what a female sex drive was
