My best guess is it's because they're from such a quality show, so they have an impact despite being fairly shallow characters.
Also, now that I think of it, I can't think of any other "obsessed girl with a crush" characters who were as overt molesters/rapists as the Kankers. Even pretty extreme characters like Panini didn't go quite so far, so the Kankers are special in that regard.
