If we understand Disney renaissance as starting from The Little Mermaid and ending with Tarzan, I've got two options: either Pocahontas or the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
When I was a kid, I found those movies unconventional and upsetting. I was used to seeing Disney movies with black-and-white morals and a happy ending where the good guy gets the girl. When those movies ended on a different note, I felt confused and unsatisfied.
Years later I grew to appreciate bittersweet endings, along with learning more about historical events and classic books. When I rewatched the movies as an adult, the knowledge of what they were based on made them feel too safe, censored, and watered-down.
IMO those two movies are too complex for kids and too childish for adults.
