Introducing some future tech beyond big robots would help. Similarly, the robot itself would need a redesign. I actually like the design from the film because the LCD readout helped give it some personality and helped give Peni and her emotional support spider some expression in external shots. Similarly cockpit shots would have to be increased because they were really lacking in the comic.
For Peni’s personality, I think the biggest thing lacking was that all her focus was around her as SP//dr. Really would like to know about her other interests and hobbies. Movie Peni had the fact that she can also do engineering, had a sweet tooth and liked to listen to certain music while she worked, and more emphasis on her bond with the spider. Also she had the stickers on her robot which also helped show she’s got other stuff going on. It’s small stuff but it helps her feel more complex.
The other big issue is that comic Peni seems to lack the compassion of Spider-Man, like. She’s mostly concerned about personal issues and that concern doesn’t really go outward much. It makes her seem a little self-absorbed. She also doesn’t emote much beyond annoyance and I dunno, she’s not charismatic enough to pull off bitchy.
So I’d suggest having her anger issues and being a little full of herself (which both show up in movie Peni, who seems quick to annoyance and takes great pride in her work, which makes sense, she is a Parker) be kind of her flaws rather than her whole personality. She could be an angrier Spider-Man, which would be an interesting way to take her character.
Her design should probably be between the movie and comic because movie is too over the top if cute and comic is painfully generic.
