I don't think it was possible for him as a person to live a life that did not eat him up inside (hence the "lousy dead-end job" when he was literally the most-important person in town). At least not with him to grow up as a person.
His mother spoiled him and then his father denied him any attention or affection whatsoever and so his entire life became obsessed with petty attention, spite, and self-loathing. But at the end of the day a man is responsible for his own person and if he can't grow out of the tricks life played on him and become a decent person then, well, he isn't a decent person and that's all there is to say about that.
It's not like Orel's been getting some terrifically great life. But he's a good person because he's a good person. What causes this? Who knows. Who cares. He is.
