to facilitate that, god makes him stick to his guns. He's physically incapable of giving in out of pain or fear. as long as he still would rather have the slaves, he keeps them. That's a kindness.
only once his firstborn son dies does he fucking get it, realize what he's done to an entire race of people, and lets them go
