DiDio caved, telling Danials the book has to take place in the present and that he couldn't use existing Batman villains. Also, Danials was told that Snyder was calling the shots for the Batman line. Danials threatened to walk, so the following compromise went into effect:
*Danial's desire to write a young Commisioner Gordon was forced upon ALL of the Batman books, including Snyder.
*While EVERYONE ELSE got barred from using any of Batman's rogues for the first year, DiDio overruled the editors of the Batbooks and let Daniels use pretty much ALL of Batman's enemies in the first issue of Detective Comics.
*Snyder wanted to use Joker, but was told he couldn't use him until the second year of the New 52. And since Danials was upset that Snyder had veto power over his stories, another exception was made: Snyder was told that his Joker story, would have to be bound towards Danials effectively "retooling" Joker for his big New 52 debut. At which point, Danials came up with cutting off Joker's face. A move that was his final "Fuck You" to Snyder as Snyder got stuck with having to use that as his starting point for his big Joker epic.
