The show has some unhealthy fetish for secondary characters. They tried to please everyone, and now no one is pleased.
They couldn't make Jackie a bitch so that he breaks with her, so they made (a rather brilliant move, really!) her breaks up with him because he's not happy, and she knows why.
However, she becomes this saint martyr figure, and he becomes the show's and fandom's punching bag.
Nothing worked for him other than help Star while she all lovey-dovey with her uncaring bf. Heck, everything right he did had to involve Star in it.
If the inevitable happens and he becomes the next villain or something, Star will just blast him, cry a bit, send his ashes to his parents, then party with everyone!

As much as liked Jarco, the best thing they could do for the show was to make Jackie into a bitch or a complete airhead. Cliches exist because they often work. Not everything needs to be subversive, especially with a cartoon about a magical interdimensional princess. The Mewnipedence Day thing was a "joke" based off the leftie myth of the noble savage being driven from their land when we come to learn that monsters straight up murdered Star's grandma and Ludo would have gladly killed Star and her people if he ever got her wand.

Then sometime in late season 2 and all through season 3, Nefcy got too close to the industry cancers that are Rebecca Sugar, Dana Terrace, and Alex the Manlet. They dug their grubby little black claws into her and forced her to change course from "Star versus The Forces of Evil" to "Star and Ponyhead and Marco Stoppable versus the Policies of Bad Orange Man "

Not to mention they are mercenaries hired by Ludo, their job was to get the wand.

It would've been fine if there was actual room to breath in the relationship before moving on entirely. He spent only one episode with her as an actual couple, and even then Marco acted like a total spaz the entire time. They should've simply spent the season building up to the breakup rather than them cutting it off immediately. It would've been better than the stupid love triangle that's for sure.

I was really into the shipping plotline because it was a twist on the usual "romance plot advancement through adversity" shtick where one of the mains briefly hooks up with a superficially attractive but somehow unsuitable person, spurring reaction from the other character which ultimately leads to the bad lover being discarded and the two mains getting together.

Jackie fits the bill for this device at first since her sexy body gives her a superficial superiority to Star but she's a genuinely nice girl who got along great with Marco so she can't simply be discarded in favor of Star when she realizes she loves Marco. If anything, the whole thing makes Star look bad since her selfish, vindictive streak came out in her jealousy.

I was excited for how this might turn out but it actually just plays the original trope out straight; Marco instantly loses interest in Jackie and she's disposed of as quickly as possible. What a let down.

Who cares about Marco?

Season 3 left Ludo on the verge of insanity. Toffee managed to break him way further than Star or his own family.

I want to know what's going to happen to him. Is Ludo returning to the villain role? Is he going to become some crazy but wise figure for future generations? Will he join Star's side in the final battle against... whoever is the villain?

He is the more interesting character right know.

For me, the Jarco breakup and Marco's characterization in the rest of S3 feel like separate issues and that's probably why it doesn't bother me (yeah, in the story they're connected, but they could've done Sophomore Slump exactly as they did but then followed it with something better and more related). I DO think Marco comes off badly, but I see that as something later episodes failed to properly follow up on rather than something "Jackie breaks up with Marco" in itself did wrong.

I guess in a roundabout way you could say Marco becoming Star's slave is his "punishment," but that's fucked up for a completely separate reason and comes off much worse to me than anything related to Jackie.

Ever since the whole breakup thing happened, I still see people take that Marco can still function as he is (the breakup was referenced in two episodes, and he's only sad that Star is taken) as a sign that he never reflected on the breakup nor figured why Jackie did that, thus labeling him as "never learned anything".
I hope that next season manages to tie that loose end between him and Jackie, have them talk and rip that band-aid off, to have him develop past that.
He really needs a victory, and to earn the crowd's love again.
It gotten really tiresome that the Main Characters are less liked by the fandom than Secondary characters.

You heard wrong. Originally there wasn't even a Mewni, Star was just a normal earth girl with an overactive imagination. It was Disney's idea to make Star an actual magic princess. And years before the show came out, we could see concept art Nefcy had made of the original concept that included characters like Brittney and Jackie.

The only "forced" characters I know of are Ferguson and Alphonso since they were never seen in Nefcy's early art, and she said Disney wanted Marco to have some male friends. You can see Nefcy was never super keen on them judging by how quickly they were dropped in season 2.

It's sure is interesting, but I want him to win and still make sense from what's built for him all the 3 seasons.

SvTFoE has always been wildly inconsistent in quality in every way - lore, animation, characterization, etc. The only thing that's been consistently good is the background art and music (the crew does not deserve Brian). I used to believe things like that Marco still holds significance to the forces of evil. Like when we all thought that Toffee was a Magneto-like villain, and he wants what's better for monster kind, and might sway Marco to accept his ideals. Battle for Mewni happened, and all of our expectation were dashed away.
I still want these things to be dealt with before the end of the show.
Though I don't think that a conflict between Star and Marco is needed for the Monsters plot. He still helps her and he hasn't expressed a difference of opinion with her in it yet.

Neither River or Moon made public who aided the Royal Family (this includes Russian Frog) during Battle for Mewni, nor they praised them accordingly to the situation.

For the rest of Mewni, Marco is Star's friend who she had a crush on. That's it.
It's not the squires fault for not knowing but the disrespect Star and parents had shown for one of his main allies.

Meteora being Eclipsa's daughter was a plot which was prepared since season 1 when Heinous' clover marks were shown.

They know where they are going with Eclipsa's plot, the problem is everything surrounding Starco.
They can't make it canon 'til the end so they make unnecesary characters intervene in their relationship, resulting in fillerish teenage drama that goes nowhere.

Star had importance in Divide and Conquer.
She found her mother in the realm, most likely her magic combined with Eclipsa's was what triggered Meteora's rebirth (Black Velvet Inferno is obviously a spell meant to kill giant enemies and that's why Eclipsa was surprised by hearing the baby cry and later thanked Star) and ultimately gave back the throne to the original royal family.

This last event was so important it became Star's entry in the Book of Spells and gave her the title "The Underestimated"

You guys should just watch Sailor Moon instead. It has no hack writers constantly trying to subvert tropes at the cost of a good story. Since starting it, I haven't cared about Star Vs. at all.

OR at least never wanted him as a main character, remenber that in the original idea Marco would be Star main bully/villain, and he and Star becoming friends was a later idea when Daron was finishing to talk with Disney executives.

I think they still going to have a connection, but Marco must be in a low point for it to happen.

Season 3 has created the perfect atmosphere for Marco to be influenced by a third party, and the only remaining character of importance to show up is Globgor.
He has the power, knowkedge and charisma to give Marco what he wants.

And, as Globgor is King of Monsters, Marco could side easily with them instead of the pitiful mewmans that ignore him.

Yeah I still remember that. Along with Marco's reflection on Toffee's coat hanger, Star's "cleaved" evil green jealousy magic, Heinous's plan to make the multiverse shiver in fear, the "prophecy room" in St. Olga,still a mystery, amounted to nothing, never brought up again yet, they don't want to resolve it.
I just don't want them to wait 'til the season finale to make Starco happen when BAM! MARCO IS EVIL! STAR KILL HIM!!!
I always wished for the show to go the Kim Possible route: make the main boy and girl develop as friends in the long run, have them get together after tons and tons of ship-teasing and heartache, prove them worthy of each others, than continue their adventures as a couple with new stories and threats showcasing their relationship for a well-deserved payoff.
But that is apparently too good to be true :(

Toffee knew what direction Marco's life gonna turn into if he continued blindly trusting Star and Mewni.
Mostly because Toffee also gave for granted his position as general, but lost all his subordinates trust when he trusted his septarian ability agains Mewman magic.

Toffee himself has been a dissapointment and lost in the most pathetic of ways, he knows how low Mewni can dig your grave.

About the "boring" part who broke him for a second there are three options:

>He had a similar conversation in the past with one of the two remaining characters to appear: Seth or Globgor.
>A "lawyer" is indeed boring when compared to a radical faction general, so he was remembering who he used to be.
>Toffee was used to be called boring same as Marco was the safe kid, and wanted to get rid of that label.

Either way, Marco's journey in season 3 (along with Seth's and Globgor introduction) has given Nefcy the oportunity to bring the topic out again... which was impossible (or terribly forced) before.

Marco did nothing really heroic during BFM. He participated in it because he was Star's boyfriend. Author made knights irrelevant to make a way for Marco because he was Star's boyfriend. It's intentional to make everything not directly relevant to author's self-insert some kind of cardboard decoration.
