A long-running myth of the Silver Age (Gerry Conway had a hand in it) was that The Green Goblin's identity was a huge source of debate that plagued every ASM letter column for years and that the prime suspect among fans was Ned Leeds (who was Peter's rival for Betty at the time) or the burglar who killed Uncle Ben. Stan also once said that a reader wrote in saying The Goblin was Aunt May.
Thanks to the magic of torrents, I've looked at every issue's letter column from 17-43 (it usually takes 3 months for letters to come in) and there were only 8 letters discussing the Goblin's ID (most from the same two issues), and not a one mentions Leeds or the burglar. Also, the Aunt May thing was a joke Stan himself made.
Now granted, Lee mentions getting lots of mail about the subject, and it's entirely possible that a bunch of people did write in Leeds and The Burglar, but none of those letters were printed.
