He, himself, wasn't funny and he'd always ruin what little he made funny by milking it. For an example, he reviewed a Christopher Lloyd film that featured a line "I was frozen today." It was meant to be funny, Lloyd played it straight, Doug had the right reaction that capped it off. Then he milked that scene for all that it was worth.
Anyone could have been the Nostalgia Critic. Which is why an unfunny, talent-less smuck managed to do it first.
