Most people probably like him, but Perlmutter does not because he got outjewed by Stan. And Marvel (and DC too) is EXTREMELY bitter when it comes to things like that. It's why Fantastic Four got shat on in this decade (they didn't have the movie rights), why DC wrote out Superman and replaced him with Mon-El (the Shuster estate was suing them for royalties), etc.

There's more to it than that. To take the most notable example; Kirby was set to resign, when he found twenty-two year old Stan Lee crying in his office as repo men took the furniture. Kirby took pity on the young man and pretty much set about building the backbone of marvel's comics. Kirby did eventually resign years later, no richer and much older. Stan Lee, however, had profited greatly. Had Kirby not shown compassion, and instead resigned as intended, Marvel would have gone bankrupt. Stan owed a lot to Kirby and gave him very little.

He was being paid for writing, and I was being paid for drawing, but he didn't have any ideas. I'd go in for a plotting session, and we'd just stare at each other until I came up with a storyline. Evanier: You did write one issue, as I recall--

Wood: One yes [Daredevil #10]. I persuaded him to let me write one by myself since I was doing 99% of the writing already. I wrote it, handed it in, and he said it was hopeless. He said he'd have to rewrite it all and write the next issue himself. Well, I said I couldn't contribute to the storyline unless I got paid something for writing, and Stan said he'd look into it, but after that he only had inking for me. Bob Powell was suddenly pencilling Daredevil.[Later on in the interview] ... I saw [Daredevil #10] when it came out, and Stan had changed five words---less than an editor usually changes. I think that was the last straw.

it is amazing how ones memory changes...
i've had to deal with this recently with my mother...

what she remembers is that she always made sure that i had 'nice things' growing up
what she doesn't remember that she always bought them on clearance -until very recently.

her habits changed but she doesn't remember that she used to be different. if something happened more than a month ago, she's not going to remember it AT ALL unless it happened years ago when she was still young, and then that memory is subject to being warped by her present habits.

aging fucking sucks. it FUCKING SUCKS. we've pretty much solved heart disease, arthritis and most cancers, but dementia is still the big killer that limits the human lifespan to about 100.

if you don't die of the other diseases, you will literally die because your brain forgets something critical like how to breathe or how to swallow saliva so you don't choke on your own spit, because the brain cells start dying and it gets harder and harder to replace them. fucking hell.

Fundamentally Stan was the George Lucas of comics, someone who overblew his own accomplishments because of fans only to have that bite him in the face. But despite the history and bad blood none of those characters would've existed without him regardless of how much creative input he had.

Why the fuck these threads never mention that the only reason why we know who the fuck the co-creators are is because Stan started crediting work and hyping up creators (instead of just creations) in the Marvel comics?
For that alone people should stop giving him shit, if Kirby's family ever had a case to stand on was in part thanks to how easy it became to tie a creator to a character once crediting begin. There are accounts of all the golden age guys telling how they're not even sure which editions they ended up working on in a given comic book.

But they are the normies, this is what they don't seem to get. Hating on Stan Lee is like that moment in your early teens where you realize your parents are lame but you can't exactly pinpoint why. It's just a fase you go into once you begin to learn of the type of shit the industry pulled, but once you actually inquire into it you realize his biggest crime was being a bit of a narcisist and a company man. Ironically, the ONE time Stan screwed Kirby over is never mentioned in these threads. I might be a bit confused with the dates and details, but in 2009 or 10, when talks about Disney acquiring Marvel were already happening, there was also some change on copyright law which allowed Kirby's family to sue Marvel for character rights again. Afraid that this would fuck them over in the purchase, Marvel set Stan to claim he was the sole creator and Kirby was working on a freelance basis, like every other creator. Apparently he instantly got back on that once the case was over and for some reason both Kirby's estate and Disney acted very out of character and ended up settling out of court for a undisclosed sum and more spotlights thrown at Jack's name.
Apparently, their official stance (as seen on Jack's kids and grandkids social media, Mark Evanier's and his other assistant whose name I forgot, the bald goatee guy, declarations) seems to be "make clear there was no grudge between Stan, Jack and Roz in the end of their lifes, but also try to hype Kirby's name up" which I think is indeed the most civilian and reasonable thing to do.

Also, on Evanier's biography (and in other texts by other people, the only one I can think of right now is Morrison's Supergods), everyone seems to try and dismiss some of Jack's claims like that he created Superman or that the FF was 100% him. Anyone who actually cares about these guys as creators can clearly see the voice and input of everyone in the early Marvel books because their voices were so fucking different (at least on the better books like Doctor Strange, FF, the early Cap / Avengers stories and etc.)
By the time creators rights had become an issue the "world at large" cared for (around the mid 70s), these guys were already working on the medium for 30 to 40 years and as far as everyone knows it was an industry that REALLY took a toll on everyone, only more so on guys like Kirby who never dismissed comic books and always loved and respected what they were doing, so we can't even begin to understand the level of resentment these guys might have felt, specially Jack who was treated like shit by his employers for most of his life only to see the british invasion and alt-comics guys receive the exact same treatment and respect he demanded for most of his life.
Like, everyone loves to tell how Jack and Roz were so receptive and would treat their fans as nephews or grandkids visiting from afar but I believe that's because that's the only recognizement they ever had, visits by a bunch of pimply kids wanting to ask about who would win between Orion and Doctor Doom.

Kirby (and Ditko) would plot and draw the comics based on a pitch from Lee, Lee would then add the dialog. Sometimes this improved things, as Lee wrote really good dialog from time to time, but sometimes it didn't, as he would occasionally change the intent of what the artist had drawn.

The black pages bookending each issue is what really makes it. That makes it more somber, and as a result more personal. Other tributes read like an obituary in a newspaper to tell everyone what the person did, but this is like a picture at a funeral where everyone already knows the story of his life.

My dude, if anyone is my hero, Jack Kirby is my hero, and just as Stan's fans have this problem, so have the King's. It's MUCH MUCH harder to see Jack's than Stan's flaws, because Kirby is at the same time the King and the underdog. It's easy to see there's 0% Kirby in anything Spidey related and by the point people started asking these questions, Jack was PISSED at the industry for 50 fucking years straight, you gotta take a lot of it with a grain of salt and if you actually cared and researched this shit you'd see how easy it is to distinguish when he was right from when he was angry.

Mon-El only got to fill in for Superman, because Robinson INSISTED on doing a year long arc where Superman and Lois lives with his fellow Kryptonians, along with writers wanting to retcon the Silver Age story where Clark ruins Lars life and traps him into the Phantom Zone, by having him actually cure him in the present day, plus having to deal with re-establishing where the UP Worlds came from using the Waid retcon that Mon-El seeded their planets.

Stan wrote Cap since the 40s actually. He started on it fairly early too, i think Stan was the one who came up with the circular shield.
