Silencer, Terrifics, Brimstone, and Sideways were all good. The problem is you can't push a new title character these days because they have no brand power. The only way these guys would have gotten better numbers is if they first appeared in a cartoon or tv show first. That's the sad truth of the industry now.

See, comics from the Big 2 exist to basically be R and D for TV shows, movies, and video games. I wouldn't put Sideways showing up in The Flash or whatever off the table.

Strange thing is Sideways was written by Didio himself, and only made it to 13 issues. It's stated that Derek "Will Return" but how is anyone's guess.

My biggest criticism for sideways was that it didn't stop to smell the roses. Slow down a bit, hang out with ernie and emeline, expand on the villains and their motivations. Remember that cult aspect that never showed up? Consequence of rushing through.

I would have made them short b-stories in established books to build awareness and demand for the characters. I some get well received, those get a series. If not, I'd put that crop of b-stories in a compilation and rotate in new characters to test out and repeat the process.

All the big name JLA characters disappear for a year both in universe and from store shelves
All you get is the New Age and the more obscure DC characters before a big event where the new guys and nobodies have to help bring back the big guns
This gives you ample time to get people into them
