Nothing recently, the show has been on hiatus since April, but Season 3 was a complete shit-show from beginning to end. Pointless love triangles, boring racism allegories, they got rid of their best villain in the season finale, replaced the old villain with misunderstood grandma who actually "did nothing wrong" (tho, I love Eclipsa, she's the only good thing about S3), etc, etc.

The problem is how they consistently teased about Toffe having more hidden just to completely discard him on season 3, that's terrible storytelling, even if he show up on season 4 the fact he was ignored on season 3 fells like the writers simply forgot him.

Things like Gravity Falls, Star Vs, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Korra, Avatar, or (Insert Title) all have a vauge outline where they want to end up because more often than not a good chunk of these shows were greenlit during the time when they're all trying to figure out what show they wana be. Writing isn't as tight, characters are still kinda wonky but it all gets there eventually.

Thats what sucks most though. Because they do it all on the fly sometimes they'll have a really good thing going, kinda like how Star Vs, did with Season 2 or what Gravity Falls had for the first half of season 2 then they run out of it. They had a bit of it planned and have no idea where to go, or where to get the point they want to. Which makes it all the more bitter when they begin to tumble when they started to look really good

This isn't a new thing by the way. Early Disney animated their films as they wrote them, with only a loose outline for reference

I'd say some of the hate for these cartoons wouldn't exist if the writing staff actually knew what the hell they were doing and not try to make up shit as they went. Look at Over the Garden Wall, it gets praised to high heaven. Even on /co/ which is a fucking rarity to see considering how many "Western animation is dead" threads have hit bump limit.

Over the Garden Wall has the advantage of being a 10 episode mini-series, something that's much easier to plan in advance compared to the 200+ episodes of Adventure Time and 100+ episodes of Steven Universe and Star Vs. Hell, Steven Universe's crew admitted they didn't even know if they'd last beyond the 26th episode.

I think that's been pretty obvious since Season 2, OP.

The problem with SvtFoE's writing--besides the occasionally obnoxious jokes and unfunny one-shot characters--is how easy it is to tell that Daron never really had a tight grasp on what kind of story she wanted to tell with her show. Unlike Steven Universe and Gravity Falls, every major plot point just feels made up on the spot for the sake of keeping the show going. And unlike Adventure Time, the Star Crew wasn't able to accidentally slide into a compelling overarching narrative. Sure AT shat the bed towards the end, but Seasons 3-7 somehow managed to make the generally random wackiness of those earliest episodes fit into the more serious show that later developed. Star vs failed at pulling that off.

For comparison, Over the Garden Wall was likely all produced within a couple of years and all of it aired within ONE week while Gravity Falls probably got greenlit and started production around 2010/2011. They didn't finish the last episode til literally one month before it aired, so that would be roughly FIVE years of working on one show.

Me too, I found the episodes that took place in Marco's universe entertaining. I liked most of the characters too (Marco's parents, Brittany, Jeremy, etc.). I wish they didn't move away from that so much.

I can understand this perspective, but I disagree. The point in the show where everything legitimately went to shit was season three, after Toffee's death. Let's just ignore Toffee for now, since he's been griped at enough; let's talk about Star, specifically her resurrection. Let's talk about her "being a dipper".

You see, early on, the show set up this impressive recurring theme of dichotomy. Star is carefree and reckless, while Marco is careful and has foresight. Even her ultimate enemy, Toffee, is calculating and rational. She loses against him, despite using all of her strength, and only beats the villain by nuking and ruining everything. Even then, in season 2, we find out that it was all according to keikaku for Toffee, anyways, so she didn't even win. But what season 1 establishes right off the bat is that Star and Marco are opposites, yet complementary to each other.

In season 2, we have a stronger thematic dichotomy. We compare Star to Jackie during the great cuckening from Bon Bon onwards, we compare Star to Ludo immediately after he gets his own wand and he compares himself to her while training with Glossaryck, we have Star compared to Moon when Baby does her evaluation, we have Star compared to Eclipsa in the same episode. Star is compared to so many people overtly. Meanwhile, Marco is being compared to Toffee repeatedly, and discretely, from the moment he looks at his own reflection in Toffee's suit mirror, and everyone remembers the Monster Arm. Even the wand, cleaved, is a dichotomy, running off of emotions, and yet Star manages to succeed and create a literal Tree of Life by combining both pink (positive) and green (negative).

Then Season 3 happens.

Now, it's not about complements. It's not about dichotomies. It's not even about learning. It's about DBZ-level bullshittery where the retard wins by powering up hard enough. Forget Marco, Moon, and River being literally worthless during Battle for Mewni.

What pissed me off so vehemently in Season 3 is that Star and Marco had been complements to each other, and then both of them went full-retard and completely destroyed their characters for no reason other than to fuel Nefcy's friends' need to ship literally everything as soon as possible, but in the most boring, blatant, pathetic way. The viewer count skyrocketed after the Bon Bon episode, not just because of the porn, but because Star literally fucked up and put herself into a position to be cuckolded. It was so organic, so natural, that the majority of the older audience watching it with their stupid cousins or nieces would go, "This could actually happen in real life," and made them backtrack through one and a half seasons that are chock-full of red flags showing how everything was going to fall apart. It did something so poignant that it became the most-watched kid's cartoon of 2016, and that's not bullshit. You can look that up.

It's not even Star fucking up that made it work so well. It's that the show's development made it happen. Marco is a very literal character. Forget Star thinking that dollar bills are literally called "monies" because she's retarded; Marco takes things quite literally. Star doesn't need a hero, she needs a friend? Alright, I'll be her friend, and pursue Jackie. Star says she's fine at the concert? Alright, she's fine, and I'll make sure to tell her she's my best friend, because she said she wanted me to be her friend and she calls me her bestie. Star confesses to me during her Song Day through Ruberiot? Well she said it was an accident, and she makes accidents happen a lot, and she wants to still be friends, so I'll believe her on that.

Whereas Star, his OPPOSITE, who had been believing the OPPOSITE of what she was saying, and was doing the OPPOSITE of what she promised to do, had been acting like she has no limits, she absolutely hit a wall because she had no one to teach her anything, anymore. She cut off her mom, Glossy was abducted, and she couldn't rely on Marco because she was too infatuated with him. She was at a point where she couldn't go any further, despite her claims to the contrary, because even when being pushed to Dip Down, she needed Marco to do it.

Marco, meanwhile, was continuing to progress. Red belt? Yup. Jackie? Check. Income? Secured. He was on the up and up, and there was nothing that could stop him.

In fact, their only handicaps were... themselves. Star, who believed she could do anything, felt she was fate-bound to be a boring queen. Marco, who was successful in school, socially, and financially, believed he was totally lost and behind everyone else and couldn't do anything. They were OPPOSITES, and yet COMPLEMENTED each other because they made their lives better, together.

This is what made everyone question whether or not the Blood Moon pact was legitimate, or fantasy. Star and Marco go so well together because, despite being opposites, they are complements to each other. Their personalities conflict, their means are completely different, but their goal is the same; to be there for their best friend, no matter what. It's what made "Star is a cuck lol" memes so cathartic, because it wasn't something ham-fisted in to fap to; it was something very, very real.

Season 3 has taken this dichotomy, and thrown it out the window. Marco doesn't act like Marco anymore. Star doesn't act like Star anymore. This isn't even character development, this is straight up character assassination.

Starco stopped being CUTE and PERFECT the moment Star acted in a way contrary to Star, and that was by being a "dipper" instead of relying on genuine teamwork with her best friend.

The plot isn't even that bad, the main problem is that the season managed to piss off everyone possible.

It still leaved a bad taste in my mouth with Starco even after booth buddies which pretty much confirms even more the endgame, it was nice seeing the meltdown but is still a downgrade compared to their relationship in s2.

I'd say the largest plot, like the Toffee and Eclipsa/Globgor stuff, was planned in advance. Not S1 early, but by mid-S2, yeah, I think they had the framework. There were guesses about how Heinous and Globgor shared some features and could be related, even if that never took off among the fanbase so that her being Eclipsa's daughter was somewhat surprising, and in Crystal Clear you can see Eclipsa in the contract pose with a purple arm around the time they started making Moon consistently wear gloves (there's no reason for her to have gloves when visiting Ludo's family and dressed casually, but by then they were aware that she was supposed to be written as having scars. Even though they forgot that later in Stump Day because S3). I'm pretty sure they knew in S2 how BfM would go and what they wanted to do with Eclipsa.

What I DO think they made up as they went along is stuff intended to pad out the 3rd season because they initially weren't sure they'd get a 4th. Amelia Lorenz has said they knew comparatively early in S2 they would have a 3rd, but somewhat later in S3 that they'd get a 4th. Makes it seem to me that, prior to S4 being greenlit, the plot was intended to be contained in S3 before learning they could space it out and needed to add stuff in. Maybe Divide/Conquer could've been a midseason thing.

What I think they added, based on stuff they focused on that hasn't impacted the larger plot, is Tomstar (and Kelly flirting with Marco if that even counts) and Marco as squire. Booth Buddies could've happened without Tom and Star together, and in the show their relationship occurs offscreen like in Lava Lake Beach. The whole squire arc doesn't really change shit other than Marco being Star's dog, because his fighting ability was said to be a result of Hekapoo.

Both just feel like bullshit meant to pad out the season. That said, I think some of the stuff planned out like Meteora was also shit, so I don't think not having S4 would've made it any better

Moving to Mewni was a mistake too but it could have been great if they had spent time actually developing the place. Instead they just occasionally teleported to random places like the Pigeon Castle or Ponyhead's land without really explaining how or what their being was (it's not even clear if half of these places are on Mewni, or another dimension all together). Or you got that recycled Magic Walmart place or Rivers running around innawoods again.

Most of the one-shots sucked. The MHC is moronic and underdeveloped, did anyone really care when that goat guy died or were you just sperging out because "OMG DEATH IN A KIDDIE CARTOON ITS JUST LIKE MY ANIMUS NOW!!!"? We hardly knew ye. Season 2 had some pathetic one shots too but at least you had the ECA characters to back it up most of them were decent to great.

I don't think its really bad yet. Most of the people exaggerating it's downfall are opportunistic SU and Gravity Falls fags trying to direct attention from those own show's shortcomings (and SU was never good to begin with). But Horseface is really going to have to do some soul searching (or should I say sugar cube searching) on what she actually wants her show to be if season 4 is going to win back viewers.

I've had this feeling since season 2. The writing is completely linear and rarely clever. Normally I don't mind this for 11 minute cartoons, but the shift in focus towards relationship issues highlights this flaw. This is just the wrong format.

Think that anon's getting at how some people say Pony Head is Nefcy's favorite character and that's why she appears so much.

I don't really believe that since I've never seen her say it anywhere and the original version of the character she drew in her webcomic had no real similarity to the version in the show besides being a pony head, but someone on the crew must like that character or at least believe most of the fanbase does.

It's like, Eclipsa is notably powerful and Star's ability is comparable (though Star's currently not at her level due to being younger and less experienced). Just an establishment of powerlevels and a way to explain away how magic seems to be OP: what Star's doing isn't something everyone at her age could do with a wand, she's a prodigy.

I didn't actually want/expect Star to go "evil" (mainly because obviously there'd be no real tension and that couldn't last too long anyway), but if Eclipsa was played darker than she is or if they actually fucking interacted more in S3 it'd feel like a better use of foreshadowing.

There's an episode were a shopkeeper tells Tom to get out his store because he's a monster, but once he realizes he's a prince he asks for forgiveness.

Tom also talks about being "discriminated" for being a monster.

His family are only allies with Mewmen because they are royalty. (basically "rich privilege")

They are still currently refered to as monsters.
(even though it doesn't make sense considering it wasn't brought up until recently...)

People had been saying even in S1 that the reason things like demons and pony heads and similar non-Mewman things (as well as creatures from other dimensions) aren't considered monsters could be because they're allies of Mewmans or have riches/power, and the show confirmed that in S3. I don't have a problem with that.

It feels like a slight retcon to say that Tom's really HALF demon, has a Mewman dad, but it's not really worth getting worked up about either. Like the guidebook implied his dad is ruler of the Underworld, when now it seems it's his mom and dad just married in, unless they're a really patriarchal society where the males are in charge, which still feels weird because his mom is a 30-foot devil who cries lava and his dad's just an angry dude. The Blood Moon Ball also featured background demons that looked in the same ballpark as Tom and it'd be weird if they were all half-Mewman too, Mathmagic shows a demon Star that looks more like Tom (though arguably one of her parents could be Mewman), etc. It's not major considering demons were never given some full biological description before, and Tom DOES look more humanoid than not so saying he's got Mewman blood isn't a stretch, but I feel certain he wasn't thought of as anything but a demon until S3.

The problem is all the related "monster" shit about him we'd never seen being presented like it happens ALL THE TIME: shopkeepers mistake him for a monster! He gets weird looks! Eats monster food! Has a devil tail that he's hidden the entire series Star's never seen! And yeah, on the show's side you could say there was just never an occasion for that to come up, but it feels really fake and forced when it all happens across just 2 S3 episodes.

It all complicates the larger issue, the show rarely ever showing monsters like Buff Frog that this plotline's about by focusing more on the struggles of a privileged rich kid not even recognized as a monster. Also Tom was shit in S3 and this didn't help.

Headcanon: The Butterfly Form mutation is a result of magic radiation from being exposed to magic from the wand for an extended period of time. The Butterfly family generally has cheek marks because magic radiation altered their DNA / bloodline, and presumably the women get little wings on their back. Marco, after being around Star's magic for an extended period of time, had cheek marks when using Star's wand, and when kissing her in the photo booth, but only after Star grabbed the photo set. This, again, reinforces the theory that magic influences the Butterfly Form, just as Star's second form was a result of resurrecting and recreating the Realm of Magic.

Mina already talked about a "doctor" in season 3, who gives her orders she can't disobey. As Solaria describes human experimentation in a scientific way, Mina is most likely talking about someone Solaria knew.

Eclipsa's father has also appeared in the show (talking to Marco and helping Eclipsa) but is yet to be explained how he communicates through the portrait.

Finally, Eclipsa's ex-boyfriend is identical to Toffee.

Yeah, I completely agree about Buff Frog. There was a lot of potential for him working in the castle, and that concept wasn't even "wasted" so much as literally not even used at all since it wasn't referenced again until he left.

I really think that they decided on their monster plotline fairly early in the series, but at the same time they're just not all that interested in writing monsters. Buff Frog's the stand-in for monsters collectively who only appears in S3 when it's absolutely necessary. Tom and Meteora are half-monsters, and it feels like that aspect of them was introduced just to retroactively add more monsters beside Buff Frog to the regular cast instead of having to introduce new ones (okay, for Meteora that was actually central to her plotline, but for Tom it does not change shit about how he acts or is perceived or anything). There's Ludo, but he's pretty much never had anything to do with the monster rights issue because he's a privileged rich guy too. And Ludo didn't do much this season after Battle for Mewni either.

I guess Globgor could help in this area, but somehow I'm not expecting much.

It really does read like their initial plot draft for the series stopped at Toffee's defeat, with a vague "FILL THIS IN LATER" note for Eclipsa.

Everything since then has been the new writers and creatives on the team scrambling together to continue a plot that that they had no hand in crafting, and no old notes left to mooch from.

They didn't need any more notes. The setup leading up to BfM... heck, even following BfM had sufficient enough threads, plots, and themes that they could have coasted on fulfilling them alongside the regularly scheduled fluff, world/character building episodes that were a staple of the show through S1 and S2. Instead, we got the rushed call to action from both the main characters, which if you believe some of the theories, instead aligns to the theme presented in Bogbeast being the overall theme for S3.

"Monsters" have been used to represent racism narratives for a long time, because they both represent fear of the Other in popular consciousness. I'm strongly anti-racist myself but I understand it can get a bit heavy handed when something like Zootopia uses predators as an allegory for victims of real-world racism (and doesn't always make sense, because fictional species have vast differences that even most racists can admit dwarf those between actual human nations). In my opinion, something like Shrek unironically does it with a lot more depth; Shrek doesn't want to be violent but the fact that he gets treated as an outcast for being an Ogre is part of what makes him angry in the first place, and this unintentionally validates the fear that humans have of him.

I really wish they kept the theme up with having Meteora and Eclipsa as a daughter-mother pair to compare to Star and Moon. One has a chaotic child and orderly parent, and the other has a orderly child and chaotic parent.

But this was back when I figured Meteora would use her monster lineage and royal bloodline to rally the disenfranchised monsters to her cause, promising them better treatment in her new regime.

So Star would be caught in the middle of trying to make peace between two sides trying to escalate a conflict: Meteora readying the monsters for a siege, and Moon feeling it's just business as usual for monsters to get "uppity" once in a while and ready to rise to the occasion to put them in their place as previous queens have done since it's their duty to do so.

You can even work the monster-vs-mewman conflict by Star trying to have friendly monsters work alongside Mewmans on farms or as squires, and showing the obvious friction that would cause (especially since we see squires like to haze newbies they don't approve of.)

Your mistaken in what Meteora's purpose could have served. Let's focus on what Star's stated goals were, and who her opposition to that goal was.

Throughout Season 3, Star decided to act more like a princess, and all of the previous princesses did something to make them stand out after getting the wand, but before getting crowned. Star had decided that she would strive to bring about Mewman / Monster peace, which is something that was first brought up with her treatment of Buff Frog back in season one's episode, Mewnipendence Day. This wasn't something that suddenly came up out of nowhere. It was believable that Star would do something like this.

However, there was absolutely no legitimate opposition towards her taking this action throughout the season. For example, Moon's mother was slaughtered in cold blood by a monster, and yet there's no Star / Moon episode that would paint Mewman / Monster peace as anything but a blurry gray line, as both of them stood their ground on what they believed. Whereas Moon would take the position that exceptions do not prove the rule (Buff Frog), Star could take the position that exceptions prove the rules can change (like the alternative monsters). In this argument, Moon represents order, structure, and security, but at the same time stagnation and narrow-mindedness. Star represents freedom, independence, and change, but also risk and chaos. This argument easily overlaps into Eclipsa's behavior, which complements the relationship they were building between her and Star, and even with Heinous' behavior, where she demanded absolute stability and perfect repetition.

However, the show decided to draw a solid, defined, heavily-annotated black line, instead of the murky gray. Eclipsa's actions don't represent any higher meaning: Shastacan was literal garbage, and anyone else would be a better alternative. Forget the idea of taboo, uninhibited freedom, it was simply the most-rational choice to bang a monster.

Moon, also, suffers, because she is hasty to believe that there is a clandestine conspiracy against the Butterflies, despite all evidence to the contrary. The concept of Star not being a real Butterfly ruined so many characters that it's still difficult to believe that it's considered canon. When the episode first aired where Moon and Eclipsa go in the records and find that it's been altered, literally EVERYONE WATCHING agreed that Eclipsa, in the time Moon was passed out, could have easily edited everything herself, and yet in-show Moon, the second only to Toffee as the most-rational character within its universe, immediately agrees with Eclipsa "Monster Fucker" Butterfly that she's been set up. Moon is immediately on Eclipsa's, and in turn Star's, side, which removes the last ounce of perpetual friction in a season that didn't have a legitimate, underlying villain.

But it's Meteora that completely enrages me. Early on, we have Jelly Goodwell warning that Mewmans and Monsters can't mix, because the end result is disastrous. This was something lingering in everyone's mind when Meteora BTFO every single princess at St. Olga's, and even permanently scarred Pony Head. Turns out, it's worthless. Pony Head recovers. Meteora goes full-retard mode. It's just another monster brawler, monster defeated, everything pretty much resolves itself.

Meteora is a Mewman / Monster hybrid.
Meteora is the natural result of Mewmans and Monsters co-habitating.
Meteora is the end-result of what Star is wanting to achieve.

The writers did NOTHING with that.

Instead of giving a legitimate reason for the Butterfly's to be deposed, to write out Moon and remove Star's royalty status by having the massed public go full-French Revolution on them because Star is trying to enforce a policy that results in abominations like Meteora, the writers pull the asinine stunt of saying Star isn't a real Butterfly and Meteora will turn into a full monster.

We didn't need the Marcnificent Seven. We didn't need to visit the Sanctuary. We didn't need anything that happened in Divide and Conquer. What we needed, more than anything, was for Meteora to ask Star, "What is it you really believe?" when every eye is on her, and see Star break, and fail.

Season one's ending is Star breaking, doing what Toffee wants, and only escaping by the skin of her teeth.

Season two's ending is Star breaking, doing what Moon wants, and only leaving after barely saying goodbye.

Season three's ending should have been Star breaking, doing what Meteora wants, and... who knows? Leaving for the Lucitor Kingdom? Returning to Earth? One thing is for certain, she wouldn't be in the Butterfly Kingdom anymore, and there would be a genuine incentive to watch season four.

This is what's so agonizing about season three. There is no thematic beat. It is the very definition of "throw everything to the wall and see what sticks". It's so painfully ironic that these writers want to make a show about Star being independent and a "dipper", when they can't even be assed to skim the surface for the easiest plot threads to grab.

So, I guess it's true about what they're teaching kids these days. About an hour ago, I had a lengthy conversation with my 14 year old niece, whom I was watching for my sis, about her favorite kind of porn.

Nefcy knows damn well a girl loses all interest in a boy at that point, and her relationship inserts have been honest so far.

Tom will dedicate himself fully to Star, and she will try to be happy about it and make it work but eventually has to admit to him that she just isn't in love anymore, break up with him, kick Marco out of the castle and take a long break from boys. I see room for a long Ludo arc.

It's funny to me that this was originally Solaria's spell, but she died before she could perfect it so it's inside Eclipsa's chapter. The problem with Star VS was either the outline was too vague or they didnt have enough episodes to execute it because of the movie at the start of the season.

A lot of things in Avatar were done on the fly but Brian, Mike, Aaron, and the other few guys always had a strong idea of the general direction they wanted to go with certain characters or events and discussed it with eachother, and argued with eachother when they disagreed to find some compromise and keep the show consistent. Star VS season 3 felt like no one working with Nefcy had an honest conversation like that, a lot of episodes dont flow with eachother at all.

What're the chances of on3 of the directors... or even Nefcy herself dishing the dirt on what happened during S3. It definitely has a noticeable shift in how everything worked together. A drastic shift from the feel that S1 and S2 had. Was it a single actor? Multiple competing factions? External interference? Nefcy herself getting burned out and letting others take the steering wheel? For there to be such a consistent outcry and general consensus of this season feeling weird and different, regardless of whether you think it was good or bad, I can't help but think some of the staff was ambivalent about the end result...

Bisignano (Fish Hooks, Uncle Grandpa, Mixels)
Infantino (Camp Lazlo, Flapjack, Regular Show)

Varon (Billy & Mandy, Clarence).

As you can see, his fellow directors came from shows that were chiefly episodic and, while there may be underlying lore and consistency within the show, it was sparse enough to allow flexibility within the show's plot. There may have even been a few callbacks or themes in the shows they used to work for.

Volpe, on the other hand, directed episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender (S1E4, 8, 11, 15, 18, S2E1, 4, 8, 10, 13, 16, 19, S3E1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 17, and 19) and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (S1E17, 22, S2E6, 9, 11, 18, 21, S3E5, 6, 12, and 14).

In other words, Volpe's track record is with shoes that have an established story to them, and has worked on them from their first episodes all the way to the end. He's used to stories that have definite key notes throughout the run of it, as opposed to only episodic storytelling.

It shows, considering how messed up and unfocused the third season is without him there to give keen advice.

The blending of both those worlds and the character interactions between them actually made it quite comfy.
But I don't buy the fan pitches stuff. There were aspects early in the series that slowly and steadily bloomed into something more. It's part of what made rewatching episodes kind of a joy. No. I still hold S3 got subverted from the inside and turned it into a dumpster fire.

Even though there some hints of lore in season 1, it's obvious that most of it wasnt really thought up until recently. For the longest time it wasnt clear whether Star's kingdom was Mewni, or if Mewni was the dimension, and eventually they settled on it being the Butterfly Kingdom. It wasnt even clear whether all Mewmans are bugmen and get Mewberty or if it's just the princess until the Book of Spells came out.
Stuff like this didnt really matter when the show was just an episodic comedy about life on Earth, but then the show suddenly is 100% on Mewni and barely does any worldbuilding. To know anything about Mewni or the Butterflies you have to read two books.

That's one of the reasons season 3 was disappointing to everyone. It didnt satisfy the lorefags who were pissed off at all the "filler" and shipbait episodes and some of the lore we got was either inconsistent with earlier seasons or seemed like a sudden asspull. It pissed off shipfags because it needlessly made Marco Star's lapdog. People bitch about Star and Marco being OOC because some episodes bended their character to allow the story to happen instead of the characters naturally guiding the story, the latter being much easier to do with the earth episodes.

Honestly at the same time the squire thing and the whole play of it could been good if it didn't take the entire season to resolve it, sounds good for character development but we spend more time Marco trying to fake this new relationship with Star instead of resolving it, Booth Buddies should have happened way early, i really wanted to see more moments like the finale where he actually standup against Star.

Yeah, Star Vs treats its lore like other shows treat pop culture references. It's not done in a clever way, or of any consequence. I like lore, but in this show it's there for plotting convenience.

I don't care who ends up with whom, I just want the writing to be able to justify its decisions and to make them satisfying. It's tough to do that in the confines of 11-minute episodes, which they chose because it did start out as an episodic comedy, and that's what I mean when I say the problems started with episode 1. I still remember the first half of season 1 fondly, and it held so much promise. 2 onwards, I just don't care.

The whole Marco goes to Mewni premise might have been fun as an inversion of Star's shenanigans on Earth. Except it had nothing to mirror, because Star's time on Earth was mostly spent fighting the monsters she was supposed to be hiding from instead of dealing with Earthly conflicts through magic.

Of all the complaints about season 3, for me this is the biggest because it's just so easy to fix. How could they write an entire season about Star trying to bring about monster rights but not realize that this plotline needed some ideological conflict. Its basic storytelling, how did they fuck it up? Moon has every reason to either undermine or deride Star's efforts but it just never comes up. No one is vocally against her besides Mina which makes it even dumber when all the monsters suddenly leave Mewni for good.

The purpose of that scenario in the beginning was for Star to become friends with Marco. Repeating that scenario is pointless because Star is already friends with Marco and doesnt need to be forced to live with him.

If in season 3 Marco still lived on Earth and was just using his scissors to visit Star every day, what would have even changed besides the weird subplot where Marco is estranged from his parents?

Why would Globgor want to destroy anything? He was the leader of all peaceful monsters, while Seth ruled the pro-war ones.

The guy just wanted a family (already has it) and the union of Mewni and the Monster tribes under peaceful methods (Meteora as queen?). It makes no sense for him to turn evil.

I get the feeling they did it just to have a way to provide an accurate flashback to Meteora as an infant that she wouldn't be able to remember on her own, except they DID have her remember her room at the temple and act like she was a toddler when taken away despite the flashback placing her as a baby who doesn't even seem able to walk or speak.
Also said flashback could've just been done by one of the MHC since they had a part in that and are actually still alive to remember that time.

And it's also weird that the contents of that flashback were only communicated to the audience and not someone like Moon, Star, or Eclipsa who you'd expect they'd be relevant to as well.

Umm, sweetie, this is a light hearted magical girl cartoon for children. Not interested in discussing how realistic things are in an fantasy cartoon w/ talking lizards and frogs.

This is definitely the mindset most of the writers had for the season. Despite introducing political drama with Star trying to make peace between the bosanski and balija, they were too chickenshit to go all out like you described because that would be too much for their TV-Y7 target demo.
Its either that or the writers didnt care and just wanted to write fun characters and fun scenarios like in the earlier seasons and ignored the overarching plot, which is why Eclipsa is just that fun cool aunt instead of worried about her own family.

Yeah, that is true. They did actually manage to do something like that though with Moon being worried about Toffee's return and Star's safety from the end of S2 up till Battle for Mewni without going full grimdark, so it could've been at least possible for a kids' show.

Hell, her chapter is a dating monster guide (ps. Pretty sure the septarian she dated was Toffee) and most political stuff is discussed only because Globgor was super worried about it (this guy is a saint for dealing with her shit)

Eclipsa is the genius trapped in a castle who considers everybody else's problems so absurd she just ignores them. Globgor, on the other hand, spent all his life in battle and soon accepted his role and responsabilities as king of darkness. They are complete opposites.

If he had woken up first we would have seen him worried and sad, but the one brought back was Eclipsa and she just goes with the flow... and fucks septarians who want to kill her mom.

Eclipsa just assumed Moon was Meteora's descendant until she showed her the family book.

I had completely forgotten about that part; makes sense and replacing "daughter" with "husband" in this scenario would spoil the twist that Globgor's still crystallized.

The rest of it still comes off like she could possibly come off as too perfect unless they really emphasize her more negative traits in the last season though. Like when they play her too chill it simultaneously makes it harder to feel she's been really wronged to the extent the show is aiming at since it's had so little effect on her.

If you notice she stops acting like that after the MHC secret is revealed. After that episode she finally understand that, even if she doesn't care about being crystalized (because she can pull another trick later and her beloved is crystalized too), this affected her daughter greatly.

This is when Eclipsa changes and we have moments like the reunion with Meteora (gif related) or Black Velvet Inferno.

In the Book of Spells we have another example. She spends years married to that fatso while fucking Globgor in the basement, not caring about a thing until...

- The king asks her to bear his child
- Globgor is tired of being the lover and wants her to run away.

And boom! The tone of her writing changes because she has just realized things are not okay and that she must do one last thing for Mewni before becoming the Queen of Darkness (a spell to erradicate septarians and win the war)

Eclipsa is in character. She is a genius who won't use her potential or even care enough to do anything unless she faces the harsh truth.

PS: Daily reminder that Eclipsa's spell could have ended everything if used by a competent queen, but the chapter was restricted because potato.

Now even Globgor is going to be a good guy, but the promos and the show itself paint him as the future bad guy, i remember those cards with him and those gargoyles.

Maybe it will be good who knows, maybe another lizard will be more evil than Toffee, but I'm just tired of the show being dishonest, just because you revert expectations doesn't make it automatically good.

I know that's how we saw her in the flashbacks, but I'm not sure if this is how NuMeteora will look since original teen Meteora was taught to hide her monstrous appearance. Since her parents won't make her do that this time around, the New Teenage Meteora would be in her "natural" form, whatever that might be. Hopefully it'll be more like pic related and less like Meteorazilla from the finale.
