The perspective is off. The box looks in front the tree's needles, but to the side of the base. The boy is behind the box, so the boy is both behind and to the side of the tree.
The shadows are bad, and are kinda randomly splashed on where Dobson thinks shadows should be. They don't follow any pattern that would indicate a light source
Something about the yellow cat/dog thing's head bothers me. It is very displeasing aesthetically. Maybe because it's so lumpy. Contrasts with the largely smooth, cartoony body.
Some of his work had been looking a little less garbage a bit recently, and this is like several steps back
