The point is that detail =/= quality. There's tons of artists who put a million details into everything, but everything they draw looks like shit because they don't understand anatomy or perspective (Ken Penders, Rob Liefeld), and there's just as many artists who do very minimalist drawings but are incredible artists who could draw anything as realistically as they wanted but simply prefer more abstract drawing (Bill Watterson, Harvey Kurtzman)
Modern cartoons aren't bad because they're minimalistic, they're bad because they're amateurish. Any style can look good if you know your fundies, and any style can look bad if you don't.
