I was originally a little upset about this fight, too, but then I started looking into the rationale behind why it played out the way it did. At least from my perspective, the justifications made a lot of sense.

First and foremost, it would've been odd to have Obi-Wan performing some insane acrobatics like in TCW or the Prequels, when this only takes place a few years before the OT. It would've been strange to see him fight so effectively here but then a few years pass and he can barely swing his lightsaber around, like in his final duel with Vader.

Second, the composition of the fight was actually pretty well-done. People have pointed out Obi-Wan's usage of Qui-Gon's style (Whatever form he used, I don't know) and how he used it to bait Maul, and I think that's clever as hell. Not only that, but the way the fight pans out just sat well with me the more I viewed it. It was very samurai-esque and I think, in retrospect, a quick, cunning duel was all that was needed to put an end to Maul's character arc. His rage failed him, like it always had, and by the time he died in Obi-Wan's arms, he knew that, and had some amount of acceptance for what ultimately happened.

This. Recall back to phantom menace and how Obi-Wan was forced to watch the duel between Quigon and Maul. Every movement, pose, strike and parry was etched into the young man's mind in the seconds leading up to Quigon's death.

For Maul's part, it was the same thing only in that he was forced to remember the whole fight and how it ended with his bisection. Obi-wan forced Maul into that pattern of thought and memory with the pose he shifted into, on purpose. The ONLY way Maul could have won was if he could have moved faster and struck harder with that memorized flow of attack that Obi-wan was ready for, except... It's decades later, and Maul is no longer in his prime. He can't strike faster or stronger, and while his skill in the Force is stronger he's still missing half of his body.

Obi-wan is also not in his prime, but he doesn't need to be. He just needed skill and sufficient speed, and he had both.

I totally disagree. Many many moments in the PT fights were tellling the story visually.
From the (bafflingly) infamous spinning sabers scene that tells us that they know each others moves to get in a hit, to all the little moments like the chunks of rock falling on both Obi Wan and Anakin, or the collector droids and lava farmers looking at their battle and not having the context, George is trying to get us to feel the big picture by visually showing us how point of view is a tiny little thing that we get too wrapped up in/emphasizing the pathetic-ness of Anakin's tragedy by scaling up the mindset of the audience.

Not at all. Look at Lucas' early films. He's an abstract filmmaker at heart.
Hell, I have a book called "Star Wars: Frames" where Lucas selects ~250 frames from each movie to tell the story, and he devotes two frames to the falling molten chunk sequence- both the Obi shot and the Ani shot.

2. Obi Wan and Anakin have way more dialogue at the beginning of their fight than Vader and Luke do.

Two opponents, who have fought several times before, square off with the intent to kill and have a mental battle before doing so, shifting their stances repeatedly, trying to anticipate their opponents' opening move.

The culmination of years, decades of thought by each of them on how to best end the fight as quickly and decisively as possible.

You honestly thought it would be a 15 minute battle with jumps and kicks and flips and spinning?
That only happens when you have no idea who your opponent is and have to spend time figuring out their style.
Or when both styles are the same and it comes down to who is the better at it, which this wasn't since they use very different forms.
Or when everyone involved is emotionally compromised.

There are entire fucking youtube analysis videos breaking down the subtlety of the scene for you, OP.

Luke is clearly supposed to be hot shit by the time of ROTJ, for example, and even the old EU had Vader doing shit in comics and stuff that he didn't do in the films. The new canon makes it outright apparent that Vader is a monster, too.

This is not true. Especially looking at the duel between Vader and Luke in ROTJ. There are moments the actors stare at each other and fail to make killing blows. There is a moment where Hamil literally waits to be hit with the blade. Hollywood duels never get it right but real life duels are boring. Star Wars never aimed for realism. He didn't need to be victorious, but I think he should have risen to the Main Villain status for at least an arc. They were really hyping him up as an unstoppable force with ridiculous potential (slaughtering a padawan and his master, taking on Obi and Anakin before real proper training, choking out Dooku and Ventress) he wasn't with the Republic or the Separatist he could have been a real wild card or at least threatening in the same was Grevious was in CW. Another cool thing was how he was one of the very few 100% original TCW characters, not an old character repackaged or anything a total fresh face with his own backstory. yeah I really think the show would have been better if Maul wasn't included.

Isn't a lightsaber duel being only a few seconds the most logical conclusion though? they are swords that slice through everything and if you get the first hit in you're pretty much guaranteed to win. Most lightsaber duels that were drawn out like duel of fates and mustafar fights only lasted as long as they did because of the environment, in a flat desert with no obstacles that isn't gonna happen.

I feel like the biggest problem between OT/ Good EU saber duels and specifically the PT ones is that so much of the PTs are all about spinning the sabers around ridiculously fast. Episode 1 actually had decent fights despite this but the first duel had Maul come out of nowhere and throw us right in--no "You're not a Jedi yet" speech, no announcing who he was, just ran in swinging. Duel of the Fates wasn't bad, but only because it was giving the audience some crazy ass shit and even then it broke up the fight with terrain obstacles that affected the fights' momentum and it kept you watching.

Yeah you can have some frantic moments, but follow this with the Dooku battles, the Grevious spinning blade-a-palooza and ending it with Anakin v. Obi-wan... it all lacks weight, it lacks physical impact when it just looks like a baton spinning contest or flailing around without any sort of coordination. No lunging, no sense of real parrying or any indication this isn't an SFX showcase but a real fight where one character can gain and then just as suddenly lose the upper hand (in b4 dismemberment jokes. You know what I mean) Even if the idea is that they're inhumanly fast, you gotta create better tension in the duel (despite us already knowing the outcome that Anakin would get his everything set on fire.)

I actually really love this idea in concept. Just that the sit where so bigger and more powerful than we realized and that they did not give a single fuck about even engaging our heroes in dialogue. In a perfect world it would have been far more intentional an effect and if Lucas had *really* bothered to treat Ep. 1 as the true introduction to the setting Maul would have been able to do this twice.

The thing is, Savage was introduced as basically mindless muscle. He didn't have the potential to be a main villain on his own, which is why his story arc has him constantly working as the brute for someone else. The other thing about Savage is that he never wanted this life, he was forced to become a monster and the moment he finds Maul he sticks with him not for power or bloodlust, but because he's desperate to form an emotional connection to one of the few family members he has left (I'm not sure he's even aware of Talzin being his mother, and in any case she only seemed to case about Maul), and sticks with him even though Maul is cold towards him and insists on regarding him as an apprentice and not as family. That's why his story ends with an acknowledgement that he was never like Maul (which ironically comes at the same time Maul finally acknowledges that he does actually value him as a brother).

People want to be entertained. I'm not interested in seeing a super realistic take of people getting gunned down in front of me but this time it actors and fake blood.
