I think Luthor would be played best if he wasn't obviously evil or cold. He wouldn't go around scowling and insisting everybody call him "Mr. Luthor." He's charismatic, charming, and manipulative. He'd come across as a kind, down-to-earth, fatherly figure with a sincere smile.
The most important part about Luthor isn't that he convinces everybody else he's the good guy, but that he convinces himself that he's the good guy. He'd give to charities to rationalize all of the evil shit he does. He'd be an expert at justifying everything he does to himself so that he can maintain his self-image as a hero while minimizing cognitive dissonance. He'd be like the Luthor in Lee/Bermejo's story, taking out time from his day to chat to the janitor, smiling at people as he passes them by on the streets… even if those are the same people whose lives he sacrifices for one of his schemes later down the line.
He wouldn't be some obvious asshole neckbeards like Eisenberg's take. He probably wouldn't even be so rigid and stuck up, like the DCAU Lex. He'd make you love him, and then he'd backstab you in the worst way imaginable.
I can imagine Zane playing that kind of character.
