>>104497285I loved it. Mulan doesn’t come off as “look how better she is than all those stupid boys!” She has flaws and learns how to get around them. She isn’t a better fighter than anyone, isn’t stronger than anyone, and doesn’t have some magic natural ability. She thinks outside the box, which was the best way to handle someone as adept at guerilla warfare as Shan-Yu. It comes off as reasonable.
Shan-Yu doesn’t require a lot of background and never feels like he should. He’s a force, a horrible event like a Hurricane that comes through and wipes out everything. We don’t need to hear his sad backstory or know where he was born, because his entire motivation is that he simply is. He works in that capacity and is very effective.
I don’t know anything about the original story, mind you.
