Watched the whole season with no real expectations. Didn't take part in any of the outrage beforehand since I wanted to form my own opinions.
The first few episodes are good when it's about getting the narrative and powers out of the way, but once it gets into more character focused things like the ball and the aftermath, I feel like it dips in quality. It feels like all the protagonists were built to be flawed characters because they didn't want mary sues, but then in doing that, they forgot to really give Adora and Glimmer enough good character traits. I'd include Entraptra in that but that might be my personal bias against "Smart, but stupid socially" characters.
The villians are the opposite where they're only given good character traits that make them redeemable, Scorpio basically doesn't do anything wrong outside of pre-planned orders, and Catra is good enough in her backstory to where you're actively rooting for her in the last few episodes against Shadow weaver
. The only thing they try is telling us the horde is evil, but people like Adora's platoon don't even know the full extent of what the horde are doing. When Adora learns what the horde is responsible for things like killing the forest she switches sides, but people like Catra never get moments like that to learn and actually decide to be evil. Most of her time has just been spent trying to get her friends back or please her superiors.
