Despite promising early episodes, this ended up being such a poorly written and rushed out piece of shit it boggles the mind. What went right?

The first 3 episodes provided a more adult Samurai Jack that matched up with it's now grown initial audience, without going too far off into "WOAH SO EDGY AND DARK" territory.

After that they introduced a new character that the audience was not invested in, and made them the crux of the story with a romantic plot that had never been the focus of Samurai Jack and it therefore alienated said audience.

The first three episodes are some of the best Jack we ever got. They have a perfect arc contained within them.

The ending should have been Jack learning to finally let go of the past, and focus on beaten Aku in the present to make a better future, as a man who lives in the past never accomplishes anything.

Regardless of what you think of the ending

It was stated from the very beginning that jack’s goal is to return to the past and prevent what dead future.
Staying there was never an option until Aku revealed there is no portals and even then jack became depressed when he lost the sword

Those two things are not mutually exclusive. You can still enjoy the earlier seasons on their own, absolutely.

I liked the music, the backgrounds, and the first three or four episodes. Everything else was kinda 'eh'.
Story had potential, but it ultimately fell flat on its face.

What went right? Pretty much everything, as it still remains one of the finest examples of pop culture from the past few years and is leagues above 99.9% of every other western animated show. The problem is society has devolved into mush-brained sheep who cannot help but think in anything other than internet memes, so when they're watching it on one screen while dicking around on their phone or other tabs they ignore the wonderful animation and storytelling throughout. They then get angry when their shitty attention spans and ideas of exactly what the show should be aren't directly catered to and then go on the internet and latch on to the consensus opinion because they can't think for themselves. Hence, "first 3 episodes", "what about the lore", "Ashi dumb" "it ruined the whole show and the world at large with it". I.e. criticism is dead.

Fuck off with this meme. The 4th episode was 100% the same in tone as the previous ones. It still was slow and mood-inducing. The 5th was a much more obvious step down, being rushed with a lot more action taking up the time.

I recently rewatched S5, it was fuckin great.

First 3/4 episodes were kino, some of the best SJ episodes of all time. The rest of the episodes was pretty much on par with any other SJ season.
Beautful and deep ending... most haters prolly wanted some sort of fairy-tale ending, so fuck em.
