Do you mean>Vlax Romanies
Then I don't really think about them much, nor do I think they bother with this extra distinction because, it essentially encompasses all rom from Austria to Ukraine, to Greece and even Turkey.
If you mean actual Romanians, then I'm cool with them. I have two white friends who have families in Transylvania. Don't really interact with them much.>>104383825
I think it has only become a slur recently; most if not all rom call themselves 'gipsy' in my country. Seeing the negative connotations for the word might be the reason why some people are against it.
I work with a few south asians at my job. Sometimes they ask me how come I look like a desi but I'm neither muslim nor hindu. And each time I have to explain this to them, they gave me this weird look for using the word 'gipsy'. I also keep telling them that this pretty much how all of us call ourselves in my country and it isn't offensive to *me*, but they still tell me to use romani or something else instead. It's always a weird experiment.. trying to explain these things to south asians.
