This is an amazing opening. The fact Riri's stepdad and friend were killed was something that was immediately dropped and not mentioned again. To see that she thinks about them and wonders why she survived when they didn't is refreshing.
Riri's autism is still present (good), but Lady Ewing seems to actually make Riri mildly likable and relatable.
Of course, I'm always fooled by an SJW book. So I'll hold off on full judgment until I read the storytime.
