A good example is Old Yeller-Belly, because I actually liked it more then the usual episode and I found the ending to it funny, but it really does have a problem with the premise. The story of this episode just goes over the place and is really nothing more then a sequence of events for certain things that happen, but it also feels nonsensical. Like it starts with Bart hanging out with a bunch of kids that Bart never really hangs out with, pranking Lisa who is also hanging out with a bunch of kids that she never really hangs out which causes their treehouse to be destroyed. So Homer gets the Amish rebuilt, and for some reason, its such a big event that all of Springfield is invited to the opening of the treehouse, but then the electrical outlets malfunction, causing a fire, and a giant ice sculpture falls on Homer, so Homer hates Santa's Little Helper for being a coward, but likes the cat for just being there. Suddenly a photographer spots Santa Little Help, Duff wants him as their new mascot, the guy who originally owned Santa's Little Helper from episode 1 comes back, for like 2 lines, to get ownership, some forced emotional moment, they try to get Santa's Little Helper to wuss out and get Duffman to get his job back. The shark gets drunk instead and they make him the mascot. They get the dog back. Like, the character interactions are good, and some moments are funny, but the whole plot and premise is just dumb. And many of the episodes don't have decent moments like that.
I also enjoyed that episode with Marge getting steroid and turning big, but I can see why people hate that episode. Even if its entertaining, its just too detached from what the Simpsons really was. It's more like a Family Guy episode or a Futurama episode, and I bet it would have been done better there.
