Yeah that's rather mean, hell at one moment Todd just told "we write AND draw, how much did you spent thinking about the characters" and lee changed the topic in a second.

I guess I get his frustration. The 90s did away with practically every tenet of the previous decades. To guys of stan's generation 90s comics just shouldn't sell. Yet they did.

Not really- if the artist's the one who's determining the story beats, the events on each page and panel, the framing, etc etc, and the "writer" is just giving at most a basic premise for each issue (which is often an editor's job) and then dialogue in the end, it's fair to say that it's more comparable to "editor who adds dialogue" than how we generally understand a writer's job in comic book-making.

It's pretty much impossible to determine how much Stan Lee was contributing at any one time. It's known that he would write scripts with descriptions/dialogue and artists would come up with a draft based on that. There was probably a lot of back and forth about composition before the final page was drafted. They truly were co-creations. Stan Lee wasn't an artist, but I think many people unfamiliar with the industry don't realize how much else goes into a comic aside from the art. IIRC, Stan Lee was one of the first people to really push for inkers, colorists and letterers to get billing alongside the artist and writer.

I forget what it was but in some collection I have I saw one of the plots he handed off to an artist and it was very detailed, he wrote pretty much the entire thing. I'm sure that varied on different titles but ASM feels like mostly him especially since the title only improved after Ditko left rather than getting worse.

I love Ditko's Spider-Man, but you really have to read his non big two stuff to get an idea of what he's like without a filter like Stan dialing him back and keeping him in perspective. Hell, even with Stan Lee his iteration of Peter Parker is a lot different from the modern interpretation of the character, and basically goes away the minute Romita took over artist duties.

If figures like Kirby and Ditko were the architects of modern Marvel, then Stan was the interior designer and realtor. They built up these grand concepts, and he added his touches to make it more digestible for audiences and added his personal flair and showmanship to every issue in his presentation and letters to build a rapport with the fanbase and keep them interested.

Watch any interview, literally ( and i mean that in the actual textbook definition of the word) any interview with the man and he wont ever miss an opportunity to begin going off on how Kirby and Ditko were artistic geniuses and how great they were.

No like literally any fucking interview, it almost gets annoying sometimes because he does not shut the fuck up about how much he admired and respected them.

No seriously go look at any random interview, he'll mention one or both and make at least an anectdotal comment on how great they were at some point in it.

Stan had an extremely important role in holding the company together, providing an overarching direction for all of the books, writing them (yes, he wrote them. The artists ad-libbed the visuals based off his plot descriptions, but that doesnt mean they werent stories he helped envision, it just means they were stories made through cooperation, and at the end of the day he still wrote the prose within the books, so you still read what he wrote), helping concept characters and defining their personalities (ESPECIALLY ones like Peter Parker), among other things.

Ditko was a introverted Ayn Rand obsessed objectivist who almost immediately after leaving Marvel went into a hermit like seclusion in some attic in Manhattan for 40+ years until he died.

The Kirby situation was more pent up frustration with the industry at large that he vented through Stan and its a known fact that he regretted doing that and that they were on good terms before Kirby passed away.

You dont know shit, all you want to do is shit on Stan based on third-hand information you learned on this shitty board from people who are either outright lying or just making shit up for a meme.

God damn theres been an influx in stupid people here lately, even moreso than normal.

I always thought it was interesting how Stan, while never badmouthing anyone, had a distinct lack of praise whenever Bob was brought up. He'd call him a friend, but never really try and sell him like he sold any other artist he personally knew. With Kirby, he was an iconic visionary, "The King" of the medium, with Ditko an artistic genius, etc. With Bob? Just the Batman guy.

He was just an example, im sure 90+% of everyone in the industry would praise stan, and most artists who worked with him. The only two who are EVER brought up as examples against him are Kirby, which is a complicated story thats not just black and white and relates more to Kirbys at that point 20+ year history with the industry and how it treated him than Stan specifically.

Ditko is just a through and through bullshit case because Ditko, while a good artist and certainly important, was also kind of an asshole and just secluded himself in some attic until he died.

And Stan didnt run the fucking company so how could he have any god damn say in executive decisions when he worked on the books at the time? He only became publisher in the 70s, when both of them were gone, and president in the 80s, when Ditko was long since in hiding and Kirby was still at DC.

I lived it, the first book I actually followed was Spawn and the first book I distinctly remember buying by myself was a Onslaught book (don't remember which one, only that it's in the beginning and they find Juggernaut completey wrecked and catatonic). The difference is that I know I was a 10 yo kid who would love anything he could read and that a lot of these works can't stand on their own (hell, they barely manage to stand with nostalgia aid).

Stan Lee always gave due credit to everyone involved. The problem is that Stan Lee was one of the only guys with public presence in the comic world, so of course the media completely focused on him and made everyone else invisible. Stan Lee is a self-made man. He's an American success story of a different time. Stan Lee was a prolific writer who was involved with every aspect of the creation and business of comic books. His imagination is just as much a part of his co-creations as any artist. If you're familiar with comics, then you know how different the styles of Lee and, say, Kirby were and you know when one is lacking the other. Together, you can see how their styles blend. To say that Stan Lee made no major contributions to the comics he accredited to is nonsense.

From what I understand Lee was actually fine with Jim Lee and Erik Larsen. I think his jabs at Todd are based on Todd's position as a rabble rouser always trying to get other artists to cut out writers and fight with editors.
