If you told me he just focused too much on Tenzin, I'd believe it. I do not however believe that he missed out for one second, on dragging his kids, wife, and various pets to see him show off with airbending even once. Let alone all the other crap he got accused of, which the other two then admitted lying about.
Toph just pissed the writers of Korra off somewhere, probably because she kept being shipped with Sokka, who the writers of the sequel dislike. Lin being the daughter of an off screen character, Sokka being dead mysteriously and the only Gaang member not to appear outside of a flashback, the implication he led a state that oppressed non benders like him etc.
All in all, writers just get embittered with the people they based their characters off, and subsequently slag off their characters. JK Rowling pulling a full 180 saying Ron should have died horribly and alone comes to mind.
