Ruby is (clearly) of Irish extraction.
My head canon is that Misery is the banshee assigned to her family.
This is why she feels so close to her - why she's distressed to the point of a total breakdown when she thinks Ruby is leaving, and why she's filled with joy when she realizes she isn't. In Irish mythology, banshees won't (or can't) follow their humans after they leave the country.
Many of these 'death fairies' - despite their inevitable place in horror literature - are benign and function as guardians to their humans.
There is an element of tragedy in this. Unlike Ruby, Misery (as a banshee) is immortal. This is why she isn't killed despite regularly sustaining horrific injuries. Will death forever separate the little banshee from her best friend? :'(
