>>103871385Schools today are a clusterfuck, that's why. I'm a middle school teacher and have had almost enough of it.
First, there's no emphasis on education anymore. Just processing and getting people through it. Federal and state funding is usually tied to two things: rate of graduation and rate of expulsion. The standards have been lowered to hilariously low levels and they hold your hand even through high school to the point where you have to TRY to not graduate. The Bush-era emphasis on test scores (itself a flawed concept as people just taught by the test) has been abandoned and now everything is as simple as possible. Kids no longer have to read the classics, and no longer have to read really anything they don't want to. They get to choose their own book to write a report about, which usually just means Harry Potter or Hunger Games.
The second thing is schools are now pure chaos, especially inner city schools. Obama began penalizing schools for expelling or suspending too many black students due to claims of racism, and Trump has yet to rectify this as he's fucking worthless. The result is that you can no longer discipline black students, who have realized this and are completely out of control. Teachers are regularly physically assaulted and berated. The result is nobody really learns anything and teachers live in terror of their own students. Sometimes the cops are called, but the students are let go almost immediately after.
Lastly, they're under the strangleholds of teachers union who literally reward failure. Endless sums of money are thrown at shitty schools without addressing core problems at home, creating a racket where billions are wasted with only greater failure each year. The "teacher of the year" award ALWAYS goes to some fat black lady from an inner city area whose school has terrible results each year but are only getting worse. But omg she had her kids throw a Frozen-themed pizza party isn't she brave.
NEVER become a teacher.
