This is pretty bad.

And it's not even an atheist thing either. People lambast Whedon for his politics but you'd be hard pressed to guess that he's an atheist from watching Buffy or that he's an SJW from seeing The Avengers, since he's primarily interested in building a fictional universe. Ellis brings his real life issues with science vs superstition into this universe and it doesn't work because said universe is filled with magic.

That and the fact that monks were the most educated men of the middle ages and that the father of genetics was a monk. If he wanted to depict Christianity in a negative light it would have been so incredibly easy for a competent writer to do so. The guy he ignored to focus on this stuff ate in front of people he impaled and nailed turbans to Islamic heads in the name of the Church. It could have been terrifying and tied in perfectly with the actual plot.
