The biggest problem with Doom is that his defining arc of actually struggling and becoming a god was done all the way back in Secret Wars, and a lot of his stories are just repeating the same same themes. But not much can beat how he was clearly the main character in Secret Wars: he had his moment of hopelessness, he rallied, and was dissected alive to achieve his goal. Of course things are going to feel like pale imitations after that.

You are talking like the original "Secret Wars" was well-written instead of an event done purely to sell toys.

If the best moment of Dr. Doom was done in a storyline that existed only to sell toys, then the character is even more pathetic than I thought.

This, most of the stuff we talk about it just to sell toys, and to sell toys you need solid writing. The whole appeal of Secret Wars, and most events, is seeing people who don't normally interact meet eachother. Dr. Doom lays back with his boots off and has a nice conversation with Captain America... I don't know what more I could ask for from a comic.

He can plot in the shadows but isn't afraid to get his hands dirty, he's a good foil to Reed Richards, he has a mystical side (the graphic novel with Strange was great) and his character leaves room for some nuance. And he looks really fucking cool, he's also the king of a country and shit. Also I should mention I barely read any comics published after 2000 so I have no idea about him raising children he tortured, becoming omnipotent every year or him being a misunderstood hero, in my mind he varies between villain and morally grey depending on the stories.

Dr Doom is great because he has a good balance of flaws and positives. Hes not all villain, but not a "good guy". He comes off as human (even if exaggerated) with his own motivations, desires, vices, and dreams so his struggles and triumphs resonate with people.
