A team of writers didn't fucking sit there and kick around the Fred Likes Traps joke as a layered joke about him having a fetish. They did it because he only had three traits in his previous versions: Trap maker, driver, and dates Daphne. If anyone on staff saw the subtext and wanted to sneak it in there, it was done long after, but that's not the basis of the joke. It's literally as simple as he loves building traps for real estate monsters.
