Politics could effect their lives. They took that risk and immediately cried foul when it happened. Federation tried to compensate them, resettle them, NO! We're rugged and independent and proud and won't be moved. Cardies start fucking them up, and they ask for help. They don't get it? They intentionally drag the Federation into conflict and put them in no win situations.
What should have happened with the maquis is what happened in Ensigns of Command. And in one instance Sisko saw to exactly that. Petulant fools with too much pride and not enough power making shit difficult for everybody, ffffuuck em.
