>>103180155After leaving Disney, he did Secret of Nimh, which is a good movie, but was barely financially successful (but not successful enough to finance a followup film).
Bluth's only two successful films in the 80s were his coproductions with Steven Spielberg. And while I think An American Tail and Land Before Time are both great movies, the secret to their success was less Bluth and more the fact that anything with Spielberg's namebrand on it sold to the general public like hotcakes.
When Bluth separated from Spielberg in the 90s, he IMMEDIATELY shat out a string of bombs, both in terms of box office and the fact that they were SHIT movies. All Dogs go to Heaven, Thumbelina, A Troll in Central Park, The Pebble and the Penguin, Rock-a-Doodle. Hot garbage, all of them.
Anastasia was a success, but largely because it rode the wave of the Disney Renaissance and the princess craze. Remember that Swan Princess was ALSO a success, and it was a total piece of shit, but kids were crazy for animated princess movies at the time so ANYTHING with that theme was going to succeed. Then Bluth made Titan AE and that was the end of him.
For a guy so well regarded, his filmography is 90% pure shit. And his biggest successes came when he was riding Spielberg's coattails in the 80s.
