So it seems that whenever someone says "Western animation" they're referring to America and Canada. What about other countries? What do they do? I hardly hear of European animation aside from pretentious arthouse projects.

Most European animation is French, and most French animation is pure fetish fuel that really isn't worth watching as an adult (or a smart kid)

Europeans for all the art they used to make kind of suck at it now. Cartoon Saloon is the single non french example I know of other than the Euro CN studio making Gumball. Wakfu/Dofus is pretty good but nothing spectacular, mostly just cool to see a fantasy setting with an action focus.

One of the big problems is the language barrier over there making it difficult for basically anything to get hugely popular in America which is where the money is.

PBS/PBS Kids is literally a free to air channel, many other channels that aired cartoons (your CBS, NBC, ect) are too. This doesn't include many of the smaller channels, some independent and regional, that airs kids cartoons. All for the cost of free compared to the cable prices.

Season 2 ends with the big reveal - Venomya (the music critic who sabotages the Winx) is actually Baba Yaga, the whole world now knows about Winx being fairies, and then Baba Yaga summons her coven of witches to fight with Winx while the Winx themselves are in a no way out situation.

It's sucks. Netflix will never make season 3 of World of Winx and that's just fucking sad. Now Netflix just waste this whole time on a live-action reboot based just on regular Winx Club while season 8 is fucked up with anime-like artstyle.

Hollywood has a decent monopoly on western animation, so most stuff comes from America. Canada has laws requiring a certain percentage of their programming to be Canadian made, and heavily subsidizes their arts, so a lot of cheap crap comes from there. Europe has neither of those things, so they don't make a whole lot of animation.

It doesn't help that a lot of EU animation is just poorly drawn porn that nobody over the age of 18 would ever care about.

From where I'm sitting Steins;gate and Lucky Star do look similar with minor differences. Lucky Star is obviously more cartoony, but they are both variations of the same theme. The biggest similarity is the eye style (in the female characters), and they both have the same pentagonal shaped heads. And yes I have seen both shows, but I admittedly dropped Lucky Star after about 3 episodes. Maybe we just see different things when we look at these shows.

One of my favourite French cartoons to this day is Dragon Hunters. Its fantasy-medival setting is unique and amazing. Series of course have some downsides like obvious plot holes or a choppy animation, but you probably won't be bothered by them while watching.

It's ridiculous to think that the west cuts any more corners than Japan, it's just that Japan's aim for artstyles is generally better looking than at least the stuff common in the US. US animation doesn't look ugly because of cutting corner's it's the overall art design.

The difference is that western animation can be a lot more varied even if the most popular ones follow the same trends for years, but even then the style that gets copied changes heavily after some time and you can always find exceptions, something which is very rare in Japanese animation because of the very homogenous nature of their society, they are required to fit in even in "art" while in the west similarities come from trends and business decisions.
